Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression and their Associated Risk Factors among Engineering Students in Karachi, Pakistan

This study is aimed to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression and their associated risk factors amongst engineering students. A cross sectional study was conducted through a self-administered questionnaire. Total 557 students were enrolled having at least six months in engineering education career with no physical or mental illness. Anxiety and depression was assessed through using AKU-ADS scale with cut off score of ≥19 scored. The mean age of the students was 20.36 ±1.58 years. Majority of the students 309 (55.5%) were male. A greater prevalence of anxiety and depression (73.8%) was found among students. Students, having family history of depression and anxiety and those who had lost a relative in last six months were more likely to be depressed and suffered with anxiety. It is concluded that students with anxiety and depression have an increased risk of academic difficulties, upset relationships with family and friends, and health problems.
