Clinical application of uterine artery embolization for treatment of uterine fibroids

Objective To evaluate the method, efficiency and complication of uterine artery emboliztion for uterine fibroids. Methods There were 56 patients. With Age ranged from 24- 51 years old with an average of 36.41 patients had solitary uterine fibroid, 15 patients multiple uterine fibroids. All patients underwent bilateral uterine artery embolization with polyvinyl aclcohol particles. Results The successful rate reached 100%, B-mode ultrasound exmination following 4 - 23 months after the proceduce, revealing a shrinkage of 40% -80% in volume of the masses. Expulsion of fibroids fragments or even whole fibroids after uterine embolization have been observed in 7 cases, which were proved by pathology. All patients symptoms were improved or disappeared. Conclusion Uterine artery embolization for treatment of uterine fibroids is effective and low complication method.
