Compositions and hemostatic devices.

hemostatic composition comprising: a biocompatible liquid, particles of a biocompatible polymer suitable for use in hemostasis and which is insoluble in said liquid, benzalkonium chloride, wherein said benzalkonium chloride is present up to 1 weight percent of said liquid, and glycerol, wherein said glycerol is present in up to 20 weight percent of said liquid, wherein said particles, glycerol and benzalkonium chloride are dispersed substantially homogeneously in said liquid, and wherein the ratio of said liquid to said particles is effective to provide said composition with hemostatic properties; with the proviso that the composition is not: (a) the composition obtainable by a process consisting of reconstituting 20,000 units of lyophilized bovine thrombin in 20 ml saline containing 0.005% benzalkonium chloride and 5% glycerol to provide sample, and then mixing 5 ml of that sample with 1g Surgifoam® powder, and optionally loading the product into a 10cc syringe and then optionally sterilizing it at 25kGy, or (b) the composition obtainable by a process consisting of reconstituting 20,000 units of lyophilized bovine thrombin in 20 ml saline containing 0.005% benzalkonium chloride and 5% glycerol to give a sample, and then mixing 5 ml of that sample with 1 Surgifoam® g powder, and optionally loading the product into a 10cc syringe and then, as an optional step: (i) sterilizing it at 25kGy, or (ii) foaming it with 3 ml nitrogen and Contin ued, sterilized at 25 kGy.
