Concrete pour record set

2006
The construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks at Milford Haven, UK is described. A total of 13,400 m3 of concrete was poured over 21- and 19-day periods at an average rate of 14 m3 per hour, a record for continuous concrete pouring. The tanks were built using a slipform technique that is new to the UK. The tanks measure 90m in diameter and are 35m high. Each of their double-skinned walls contains 6700 m3 of concrete. The tanks are part of an LNG importation terminal being developed by Dragon LNG. The concrete was supplied by a dedicated site plant installed by Hanson at Milford Haven. The company provided a continuous supply of marine-dredged aggregate and limestone to the site. Cement silos were kept topped up during the three-week pours. Hanson has also been awarded the contract to supply 140,000 m3 of concrete on the Isle of Grain for another LNG gas tank project.
