Studies on sand flies are important because of their ability to transmit pathogens that cause leishmaniasis, bartonellosis, and arboviruses in the New World (Silva et al. 2007). The leishmaniases are among the neglected diseases that have undergone resurgence since the 1970s, and their incidence has increased year after year in 88 countries, where 350 million people live in risk areas.
