Evaluation of some new Valencia orange selections in Sunraysia, Australia

1985
SummaryEight Valencia orange selections were compared for tree size, yield and fruit quality so as to identify those less affected by such physiological disorders as regreening, granulation and alternate bearing, but better yielding than cv Newton, the standard used for comparison. Appleby T. 1 selection produced the largest trees and was one of the best yielding but it cannot be recommended for planting because of a significant incidence of fruit chimaeras and leaf variegations. Other high yielding selections were Smith, Casey, Appleby T.2 and Jenner. Newton, Jenner and Frost had the greatest degree of alternate bearing. Best juice levels were generally obtained during August and February with highest total soluble solids t−1 in August whereas TSS production per unit area increased until February. Although variable in their attributes, all other selections produced better quality fruit than Newton which, despite its highest TSS production, juice and TSS levels early in the season, declined in quality lat...
