ICI Summer School 2021: Heterogeneous Chemical Kinetics

2021
Heterogeneous chemical kinetics Olaf Deutschmann Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany E-mail: deutschmann@kit.edu Optimization of design and operation of catalytic converters require the understanding of the reaction paths on the catalyst and their coupling with mass and heat transport. Microkinetic models can describe the intrinsic chemical conversion and therefore be applied for a wide range of external conditions when coupled with adequate transport and flow models. The potentials, limitations, and challenges of microkinetic models for heterogeneous reactions will be presented using examples of exhaust-gas after-treatment systems, climate-friendly chemical processes, and advanced materials synthesis. The 90 minutes lecture is structured as follows: • Heterogeneous reactions – example catalysis • Modelling heterogeneous chemical kinetics – approaches • Development of heterogeneous reaction mechanisms – digitalization • Chemical active structures – technical materials and internal diffusion • Kinetics and reactive flows – chemical reactors • Examples and challenges – technical processes
