This report presents the final analysis of data collected during the 1993 India National Family Health Survey in Jammu and Kashmir among a representative sample of 2766 ever married women aged 13-49 years and 1540 children born in the four years before the survey to the sample of women. Findings indicate that 37% are aged under 15 years and 5% are aged 65 years and older. The sex ratio is 980 females/1000 males. Almost 75% of males and 50% of females aged over 6 years are literate. The median number of years of schooling is 6.0 years for males and 1.7 years for females. 86% of children aged 6-14 years are enrolled in Jammu schools. 77% of household heads are Hindu 17% are Muslim and 6% are Sikh. 33% belong to scheduled castes. Only 18% of women aged 15-19 years were married at the time of the survey. The singulate mean age of marriage is 26.3 years for males and 21.2 years for females. Fertility declined to 3.1 children (2.1 in urban and 3.4 in rural areas and 3.7 for illiterate women and 2.3 for women with at least a high school education). Almost 50% of married women use contraception (40% modern methods; 10% traditional methods). 25% use female sterilization. 6% use withdrawal and 6% use condoms. 64% in urban areas and 46% in rural areas are current users. Peak use is among women aged 35-39 and 40-49 years. Traditional method use is higher among women with a high school education than among illiterate women. Use is highest among Sikhs and Hindus. 81% of all modern methods are supplied by the public sector. 36% do not desire another child in the future. 32% desire a child at some point in the future. 30% are sterilized. 34% do not intend to use contraception in the future. Of those intending to use sterilization is the preferred method. 18% have unmet need for family planning. The crude death rate is 8.5/1000 population. Infant mortality declined to 45/1000 live births during 1988-92. Child mortality declined to 14/1000 live births. 80% of mothers received prenatal care. 66% of children aged 12-23 months are fully vaccinated. Child nutrition is better than in other states.
