Effects on Mouse Thymocyte Biology

1996
The alkaloid designated cocaine, derived from the leaves of the Anean coca bush (Erythroxylon coca) was first isolated and identified in 1860 by the German chemist, Albert Niemann. Cocaine is used medically in nasal surgery as a topical anesthesia but most of its interest is related to its potential as a powerful addicting narcotic. Its ready availability and the ease with which its use leads to psychological compulsion and physical dependency provides an important impetus for understanding its mechanisms of action, both on the nervous system and other organ systems.
