Griffith's criterion for mixed mode crack propagation

Abstract The fracture criterion of mixed mode crack has been investigated extensively by many people on the basis of Griffith's theory. In this paper, the energy release rate of crack propagation along an arbitrary direction is obtained by the use of Griffith's theory. Then the general expression of the energy release rate criterion has been derived. The results have been compared with the measured data of the fracture testing under combined Mode II–III and Mode I–II–III loading.
