Populations of Fall Armyworm, Corn Earworm, and Sugarcane Borer on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

1968
St. Croix, a member of the United States-owned Virgin Islands, is situated in the Caribbean sea about 80 miles southeast of Puerto Rico and is the easternmost possession of the United States (McKinzie et a1. 1965). The 82-mile2 area has diverse ecological situations seldom found on a small landmass. The eastern portion receives 25–35 in. of rainfall annually and is mountainous, arid, and covered with cactus and thorn bushes. The northwestern portion, which receives up to 55 in. of rainfall annually, is mountainous and covered with trees, shrubs, and grass. Several dense rain forests are in this area, while the central area is flatlands that were once rich in sugarcane production.
