2015
ABSTRACT
The recent phenomenon of Boko Haram in Nigeria has become a subject of concern in the
country and one of the major impediments to global peace and security in the contemporary
world is the alarming rate of terrorism all over the globe. Terrorism has become a global
syndrome not only in Africa but all over the world. Analysts contend that it was September 11,
2001 attack on America that the new face of terrorism was consummated. Terrorism is spreading
like a wildfire in every part of the world and its impact reverberates beyond the location of the
actual incident. Thus, the growing of terrorism has become a fundamental security concern to
states. it remains a serious and on-ongoing threat unlike primitive method of terrorism followed
by the modern method as well as the recent development called globalization of terror just as we
have Boko –Haram in Nigeria, Al –Qaeda in the Maghreb ,Hezbollah in Lebanon, Al-Shabab in
Somalia and the recent Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The major flashpoints of the security
problems could be seen in the area of recent phenomenon of Boko- Haram suicide bombings in
some Northern states of the country, the unrestrained attacks on individuals and institutions of
the government during some of the crises suggest that there is an element of terrorism in Nigeria.
The fundamental questions are these: what is terrorism and does Boko –Haram stand alone
without the cooperation from other terrorist groups? This paper sets out to reflect the connection
between Boko –Haram and other terrorist organizations, the principles and objectives of the
group as well as its impact on Nigerian state.
