Compression and heating of a shell target by a partially profiled laser pulse

1990
Numerical calculations made using the semi-empirical OBOLOCHKA-T model and the SFERA program showed that the action of a partially profiled pulse on a simple shell target increases the compression ratio and lowers the temperature of the fuel compared with the action of a rectangular pulse (or of an exponentially shaped pulse) having the same energy. It is shown that, from the point of view of the ignition criterion, a system consisting of a profiled pulse and a simple (shell) target is equivalent to one consisting of a simple pulse and a two-stage (profiled) target. An analysis of laser irradiation of a simple target shows that one can lower the laser system energy requirements in the case of a partially profiled pulse and a simple target.
