Nanofunctionalized 3D printing

2021
Abstract Novel materials and additive manufacturing (AM) methods are continuously being developed to comply with the emerging trends of new materials’ applications. Nanosubstances such as nanofibers, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles (nanobiomaterials, nanooxides, quantum dots, nanoclay, etc.), graphene, nanocellulose, or nanowires either suspended, mixed with the matrix material, or postprocessed over the polymer, ceramic, or metal matrix enhance the capabilities and functionalities of the complex material. Current developments in functional nanocomposite materials are revealed in this chapter, presenting how different nanoparticles could yield functional materials for medical, bionic, electronic, sensing, energy storage, or structural devices. Based on the summary of published works, the limitations, further prospective, and future trends of the AM methods and printability with introduction to reinforcing agents are also discussed. Conclusions concerning the need for optimization of the processing time, resolution, aggregation of nanofillers, degradation, health and safety issues, and so on when using new nanocomposite materials are also presented.
