BOTTOM ASH FROM MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE INCINERATION (MSWI) IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

2001
The goal of project BARC (Bottom Ash in Road Construction) is to develop knowledge needed for the safe use of residues from waste treatment. The project focuses on bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) and its use as a substitute for gravel in road construction toward sustainable urban development. Aspects such as pretreatment techniques, environmental impact assessment, emission treatment, and environmental information management are investigated and developed to preserve land and water. The focus of the work is on a test road built with bottom ash, with major effort on these four innovative and applied key issues: stabilization of bottom ash by carbonation; use of ditches for leachate treatment; development of methods for long term assessment of emissions; and environmental information management using geographical information technology.
