History of Bullying in the American Workplace
2013
The definition of bullying in general, and workplace bullying in particular,
has several key components. A general agreement regarding the definition
of bullying concerns the frequency of the behavior, the presence of
unbalanced power between perpetrator and victim (in favor of the
perpetrator), and the creation of a hostile work environment (Bjorkqvist,
1994; Olweus, 1991). Randall (1997) defines bullying as aggressive behavior
with the deliberate intent to cause physical or psychological distress
to others. Bullying is a form of interpersonal aggression or antisocial
behavior in the workplace that exceeds what may be considered simple
incivility, and is associated with negative outcomes for both perpetrators
and victims (Anderson and Pearson, 1999; Neuman and Baron, 2005;
Salin, 2003).
