Mechanics and design of a windsurfer mast

This paper is focused towards improving the communication barrier between windsurfing mast designers and the recreational sailor. To begin with the idea of an “Integrated Rig Concept” for a windsurfing rig is introduced. The components and the workings of a slalom windsurfing rig are then discussed briefly with special attention given to the mast. A new test rig is then used to provide a more comprehensive alternative to the already available IMCS test. The results from the test rig successfully identified the mast’s curve and flex characteristics.
