Automated Fish Feed Detection in IoT Based Aquaponics System

2021
Aquaponics is one of the best ways in implementing urban farming as the area for farming in urban areas is very less. In Aquaponics pH level is very crucial for the growth and well-being of the fishes, which are changed due to the presence of fish waste and uneaten fish food in the water. On the other side the main factors affecting plants (which are grown hydroponically) are air, temperature, humidity and light. Manually controlling all these factors will be very hectic and time- consuming. We can use IoT based automated systems, to control these factors, through sensors and the correcting devices. Here we are doing a complete comparison study on IoT based automated aquaponics systems. We can see many automated functions here, such as: automatic feeding system, water quality control system, automated lighting system for plants, temperature and humidity control etc. In aquaponics system the fish food(pellets) plays a very important role in the water quality. The feeding intervals and rate of feeding will affect the growth and health of fishes. The excess amount of uneaten food in the water can reduce the water quality. To solve this issue, we can use an object detection algorithm using YOLO, which can detect excess fish feed on the surface of the water. According to the output from the object detection model we increase or decrease the feeding rate for the next time. Using this method, the fishes will get exactly the right amount of food, without wasting and reducing the water quality.
