Lithium-Niobate-Based Frequency Combs

2021
Lithium niobate (LN), widely used in optoelectronics, is an excellent photonic material with both large second order and third order nonlinearities., along with a wide optical transparency window. The recent advances in nanofabrication technology has enabled monolithic LN devices with high optical confinement, ultralow linear loss and efficient electro-optic (EO) interaction. The capabilities of integrating microwave control with both non-resonant waveguides and resonant-based low loss microring resonators allow for novel nonlinear photonic devices with advanced functionalities in a compact footprint. In this talk, I will review our recent developments of thin-film LN devices, including Kerr microcombs generation and soliton mode-locking, flat-top electro-optic frequency combs and femtosecond pulse generation based on EO modulators, highly efficient EO combs using coupled microresonators.
