Maximum firepower : Vale van der Merwe, an emergent ceramic artist at Starways Arts, Hogsback, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Vale van der Merwe has been working as a ceramic artist for the past five years, and in that time has developed a remarkably diverse repertoire of both thrown and handbuilt works. These include rapidly thrown utilityware as well as carefully conceived sculptural works that engage with ideas rather than primarily with function. She also makes full use of opportunities offered by high-temperature woodburn firings, and despite works collapsing while being made, breaking while being carried to the kiln and slumping during firing, she has used such occasions as opportunities for learning rather than despondency. Van der Merwe is also an actively hands-on ceramic artist who engages with all levels of tasks associated with studio ceramics in a village setting, so has found herself, for example, both creating a new chimney for the kiln, and simultaneously leading discussion around concepts for new collaborative exhibitions. There is a seriousness of intent combined with infectious confidence evident in both her daily presence and ceramics, and it is hoped that she will develop her repertoire and thinkings even further in forthcoming years. Il fuoco alla sua massima potenza : l'esordio di Vale van der Merwe come ceramista presso Starways Arts, Eastern Cape, Sudafrica Sono cinque anni che Vale van der Merwe sperimenta con la ceramica ed in questo tempo e' riuscita a creare un repertorio eccezionalmente vario sia di lavori fatti al tornio che quelli fatti interamente a mano. Sono inclusi sia oggetti funzionali prodotti rapidamente a successione sul tornio che opere sculturali concepite con cura e che esprimono idee astratte. Inoltre van der Merwe sfrutta a pieno le opportunita' a lei offerte dal forno a legna ad alta temperatura e non si scoraggia quando s'imbatte nelle sfide tecniche che l'argilla presenta, ma piuttosto le considera opportunita' per imparare. Si puo' definire van der Merwe come un ceramista capace di gestire ogni aspetto dello svolgimento del lavoro presso lo studio ceramico situato in un contesto rurale. Ad esempio, al mattino saldare insieme dei cilindri di GPL per la costruzione di un nuovo cammino per il forno a legna e al pomeriggio fare una presentazione sui concetti per una nuova mostra collaborativa. Sia nella sua presenza quotidiana che nelle sue ceramiche si evidenziano una serieta' d'intento e fiducia contagiosa e si spera che nei prossimi anni van der Merwe possa continuare a sviluppare le sue idee ed il suo repertorio.
