Effect of Color and Design of Traps on Captures of Japanese Beetles and Bumblebees

1971
Green-painted and yellow-painted traps captured about the same number of Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman, but yellow traps consistently captured large numbers of bumblebees. Bombus spp. Yellow traps without lures captured half as many bumblebees as baited traps, whereas Japanese beetles were not attracted to unbaited traps. Baited traps painted white were highly attractive to bumblebees but less attractive than green traps to Japanese beetles. Traps coated with aluminum foil captured few of either insect, and traps made of yellow plastic were not so efficient as those made of metal and painted yellow. Captures of Japanese beetles in Ellisco®, Metzger, or Scout-type yellow-metal traps did not differ significantly.
