LIFE GUARD : THE RIGHT MIX AND CONSTRUCTION COULD PROTECT LONG BEACH PAVEMENT FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS

2004
In this article the authors present a summary of the asphalt mix and structural designs, as well construction experience, for the I-710 Freeway Rehabilitation Project in Long Beach, California. The project involved 55-hour weekend closures for the construction of long-life asphalt pavements, full-depth asphalt concrete sections to replace existing portland cement concrete pavement, and asphalt concrete overlays on PCC. Repeated load shear and flexural fatigue tests and were conducted to and analyze and determine mix design. The authors also discuss the six stages of construction in the project involving median widening, shoulder work, and rehabilitating the asphalt concrete sections and overlays.
