Preparation of Low Viscosity Stationary Liquid Fused Silica Capillary Column

It is found unexpectedly that the inner surface of fused silica capillary column can also be roughened by passing through it a solution of sodium chloride suspension, which is prepared by adding a saturated methanolic solution of sodium chloride to trichloromethane. Several commercially available oily and liquid stationary phases of low molecular weight and viscosity, such as OV-101, OV-17, Superox-20M and OV-225, which are difficult to be coated on the unroughened columns, can be easily coated dynamically onto the surface roughened columns with a high rate of success. The stability of these columns on standing has also been discussed.
