manno - C -Furanosides (VII/ ent -VII, α- C -Arabinose)

This chapter reviews the synthesis of manno - C -furanosides. Approaches include nucleophilic and radical substitutions at the anomeric carbon, reduction of anomeric hemiketals and glycals, stereospecific and stereoselective cyclization of 1,4-diol derivatives, and stereoselective oxa -Michael cyclizations. The major stereocontrol elements are stereospecific substitution, thermodynamic control, and Woerpel 1,3- and 1,2-inductions.
