3,4-dimethyl-2,5,6-tris(p-sulfonatophenyl)-1-phosphanorbornadiene, its preparation and method for hydroformylating olefinically unsaturated compound

PURPOSE: To prepare a new compd. which acts as a catalyst very advantageously in its complex salt state with rhodium in hydroformylating reaction of an olefinically unsatd. compd. CONSTITUTION: This 3,4-dimethyl-2,5,6-tris(p-sulfonatophenyl)-1- phosphanorbornadiene is obtained, for example, by reacting 3,4-dimethyl-2,5,6- triphenyl-1-phosphanorubornadiene with a 20-60 wt.% soln. of dissolved sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid at 0-20°C, adjusting the temp. gradually to the room temp. with stirring, further stirring for 20-30 minutes at the temp., then neutralizing the reaction mixture with an aq. soln. of an alkali carbonate or alkali hydroxide with maintaining at 0-50°C, concentrating, filtering off the precipitated alkali sulfate, introducing the filtrate in methanol and subjecting the methanol soln. to an evaporation treatment until the soln. being dried.
