Various soil bacteria, collectively termed the rhizobia, can recognise specific leguminous plants and engage in a process in which the bacteria elicit a series of complex changes in the hosts and in which the rhizobia, during the process of nodule induction and occupation, alter in physiology, morphology and in their pattern of gene expression [see Long, 1989].
