Modalni Glagoli Must, Should, Can/Morati, Trebati, Moći U Engleskom I Srpskom Jeziku: Opšte Karakteristike I Izazovi Pri Prevođenju (The Modal Verbs Must, Should, Can/Morati, Trebati, Moći in English and Serbian: General Characteristics and Translation Challenges)

Serbian Abstract: Osnovni cilj rada jeste da pomocu ostvarenih i mogucih prevoda uporedi modalne glagole must, should, can iz engleskog jezika sa njihovim ekvivalentima u srpskom – glagolima morati, trebati, moci, iz perspektive generativne gramatike i sa elementima kognitivne semantike u analizi da bi slika o ovim glagolima bila sto potpunija. Najpre se razmatraju specificnosti prevođenja engleskih modalnih glagola must, should i can na srpski jezik, a zatim se razmatra odnos epistemicke, deonticke i dinamicke modalnosti kod pomenutih modalnih glagola, sa posebnim osvrtom na dvoznacne primere, njihovu dubinsku strukturu i uticaj karakteristika (da-)dopune modalnog glagola na znacenje recenice.English Abstract: The main aim of the article is to use the existing and potential translation equivalents in order to compare the English modal verbs must, should, can with their equivalents in Serbian – the verbs morati, trebati, moci. These verbs are approached from a perspective which combines elements of generative grammar and cognitive semantics in order to clarify certain additional aspects of their meaning. Firstly, the article deals with some characteristics of translating the modal verbs must, should and can to Serbian, which is followed by a comparison of the epistemic, deontic and dynamic modalities of the mentioned modal verbs, with a special emphasis on the issues of ambiguity, deep structure and the impact of the (da-)modal complement on sentence meanings.
