Thermoluminescence of Natural Quartz Irradiated by Gamma Rays

The Present investigation was undertaken to explore gamma irradiation effect of natural quartz by thermoluminescence. Glow curves of the samples irradiated by γ-rays were observed for various doses at the temperature 50°C~500°C and were resolved into four component peaks, B1, B2, C and D. The nature of defects responsible for each peak was determined by comparison with glow peaks resulting from the samples to which Li+, Na+ and Al3+ were added by the diffusion at 1000°C. As the results, the defects responsible for the B2 and the C peaks were due to the disturbed-network in the vicinity of the Li+ and the Na+ respectively, and the B1 peak was associated with the aluminium center, and the defect for the D peak was due to oxygen vacancy. Increase and decrease of the B1 peak height for the doses were related to the enhancement of the B2 peak and the D peak respectively.
