The formation of unwanted halogenated chlorination byproducts cannot be avoided in the water of public swimming pools. Recirculation causes a further enrichment. In a research project funded by DVGW the efficiency of powdered activated carbon (PAC) was tested for a wide range of chlorination byproducts. Furthermore operational aspects like the reduction of the amount of water required for backwashing of the filters loaded with PAC, and the discharge of residues were investigated.
