Lasting Contacts in Molecular Dynamics Simulations

In this text we discuss problems arising from a naive implementation of the so called Cundall-Strack tangential spring as a scheme for static friction in simulations of granular materials. We show how to use it safely and present extensions in the form of a static coefficient of friction and a damping of the spring.
