Physical activation of Saudi Arabia date palm tree's foliar, frond and thorn

2010
Physical activation of date tree's frond, foliar and thorn indicates that there are present of carbon that can be made useful, when at present they were burnt or thrown away as waste. From this study, using thermogravimetry analysis, it was suggested that 400°C was used as the physical activation temperature. It was also shown that date palm thorn can be successfully transformed into a good physical activated carbon with surface area of 12.37 m2g-1 compared to the date-palm frond and foliar which have lower surface area. IR spectroscopy also indicates incomplete transformation of raw frond, foliar and thorn to their respective physical activated carbon. Finally it is suggested that the use of date-palm frond to be use as the source of raw material in the mass production physical activated carbon. This is due to its abundance and availability comes from the pruning process on the date-palm tree.
