Numerical Simulation of Regularity of Pressure Distribution on Membrane Structures under Combined Loads of Wind and Snow

2010
The regularity of pressure distribution on membrane structures, due to combined loads of wind and snow, has been simulated numerically with the CFD technique.First of all,the mathematical model of the mixed motions of air and snow flakes was set up according to the principle of two-phase flows;then the model was solved with the CFD technique to study the pressure distribution on double-slope membrane roofs under combined loads of wind and snow.In the study, the influence on the pressure of several important geometrical parameters has been analyzed to reveal the regularity of pressure distribution on the roofs. The results indicate that the slope angle and the width of the roof are predominant factors to the pressure distribution on it while the influence of the eaves height and the roof length is only secondary. This study may provide a reliable scientific basis for snow resisting designs so that membrane structures can be constructed more safely and economically.
