Application of Sternocleidomastoid Flap in Operation on Parotid Benign Tumor

2009
Objective:To investigate the clinical values of sternocleidomastoid flaps in operations on parotid benign tumors. Methods:With conventional S-shape incision, the mandible branch of facial nerve was found firstly, then, the main trunk of the nerve was dissected in retrograde steps. The neoplastic mass together with the superficial lobe of parotid gland or the whole gland was resected consequently. The sternocleidomastoid flap was dissected and rotated so as to reconstruct the defect of parotid gland. The sternocleidomatoid fascia and the remaining parotid fascia were stitched together. The postoperative results were followed up.Results:The postoperative follow-ups of all 21cases ranged from 3months to 24months.All cases achieved good aesthetic results and normal cervical functions, without salivary fistula, while Frey's syndrome occurred in one case. Conclusion:Application of sternocleidomatoid flap in reconstruction of defect of parotid gland could remarkably modify the postoperative malformation of parotidectomy, and effectively prevent Frey's syndrome.
