Bacterium Anitratum Meningitis Report of a Case and a Review of the Literature

Disease caused by organisms, ordinarily considered nonpathogenic, has been reported. Most recently, attention has been called to the tribe Mimeae in this regard. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a case of nonfatal meningitis caused by a member of this tribe. Report of Case A 53-year-old Negro woman was admitted to the hospital because of bilateral costovertebral angle pain of approximately 24 hours' duration. One week previously she had had a sudden attack of dizziness and vomiting which had persisted intermittently since then. A local physician had treated her with prednisone, meperidine (Demerol) hydrochloride, and a penicillin injection, which treatment gave her no relief. Concomitant with the onset was a weakness of her left arm and leg. On admission, her oral temperature was 100.8 F, her blood pressure was 180/90 mm. Hg, and she had pronounced nuchal rigidity.
