Considerations for automatic link establishment in HF radio systems

This paper examines existing automatic link establishment (ALE) techniques for high frequency (HF) radio systems, identifying areas of improvement in calling techniques and protocols for ALE. Automated HF radio systems improved in these areas have been implemented, and results of these implementations are presented. Compromises between link establishment time and reliability are also considered.
