Mobilität in Deutschland: KONTIV 2002: Methodenstudie mit experimentellem Design zur Vorbereitung der Erhebung

2002
Currently several projects on behalf of the Federal Department of Transport, Building and Housing (DOT) are being implemented to improve the availability of data describing the transportation sector. The survey MOBILITY IN GERMANY measures the day-to-day travel behaviour of the German population, similar National Travel Surveys (NTS), then entitled KONTIV, were carried out in 1976, 1982 and 1989. The data compiled in the course of this survey will be used both as a basis for transport planning in Germany and for scientific research on daily mobility. As there has been no NTS in Germany for more than a decade and none after the reunification of Germany and because methodological developments in survey design have taken place it was decided to explore different options for the next NTS with a pilot study. The DIW Berlin and infas-Institut fur angewandte Sozialwissenschaft Bonn have been assigned by the Federal DOT to carry out this methodological study which is described in this paper. In this pilot study are examined innovative methodological approaches to transportation survey design and are reviewed experiences with NTS in other countries. The empirical part of the study evaluated different combinations of design-elements by testing the instruments and the implementation in a sample of 2400 households in the early summer of 2001. Based on the empirical results of the pilot, the study team and the advisory board decided on the design of the Mobility in Germany Survey, which is carried out since December 2001. The design of this NTS will be described in an article in the next issue.
