Abstract The big question in a publication of this kind concerns the degree to which microfiche, rather than conventional illustration, is advantageous to the reader. Obviously, much depends on the needs of that ‘reader’. I use inverted commas here because, in a sense, the printed text, sensitive and informative as it is, is subservient to the photographic transparencies. This suggests that the greatest use of British Masters oj the Albumen Print will be institutional: educational or archival. For I doubt that, even in the U.S.A., enough local libraries are equipped with microfiche readers—though conceivably with substantially more publications of this kind the situation will change.
