The diverse nature of attention has favoured that, throughout the history of thought, scholars have understood it in different ways. Right up to nowadays, there are some reminiscences of several controversies arised from that plurality of points of view. We outline a systematic account of the historical evolution of varieties of attention, arranging our statement in according with two basic axis. The fi rst one is relying on the different ways of conceiving attention all through the history: those that have conceived it like volition , consciousness binding agent, cognitive clarity , selective process , set or preperception , motor act or aperception.
