The method comprises the following steps: extracting a background from the current frame according to a background model; extracting a short-term still area and a short-term static edge from the background; further determining a long-term still area and a long-term static edge according to the short-term still area and the short-term static edge; and determining the discards from the long-term still area according to the long-term static edge. Therefore, the discards can be detected from the video without tracking the moving target. In addition, the influence of various factors such as light and crowded pedestrian is considered in the process of detecting, so that the amount of calculation can be reduced greatly. The method is high in robustness and low in misstatement rate.
