Finite Element Analysis of Five-Axis Gantry Milling Machine Main Structure

2010
In order to improve the structural performance of a five-axis gantry milling machine, a design idea of adopting parallel optimum design for key components and complete machine was investigated. Using CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software, the finite element analysis model of the five-axis gantry milling machine key components and the complete machine were established. Then the static stiffness with the gravity and cutting force load cases and dynamic stiffness of the machine tool were analyzed, and the weak links of the structure were found through the finite element analysis. According to the results of analysis, an improvement scheme was used in the structural design of the key components of the machine tool. The results of analysis indicate that the static stiffness of the improved structure is 68.4 and the first order frequency is increased from 30 to 42 with the reduction of weight 632kg, the performance of the complete machine was improved greatly.
