EPIDEMIOLOGÍA Y PREVENCIÓN DE LA GASTROENTERITIS POR ROTAVIRUS EN VENEZUELA

Los rotavirus humanos (RVH) del grupo A son la causa mas importante de la enfermedad diarreica severa en ninos y jovenes de todo el mundo. Las muertes relacionadas a rotavirus representan aproximadamente el 5% de todas las que ocurren a nivel mundial en ninos menores de 5 anos de edad, aunque el mayor impacto de la enfermedad por rotavirus ocurre en los paises en desarrollo, en los cuales causa mas de 400.000 muertes al ano. En este articulo se presenta una revision de la epidemiologia de la gastroenteritis por rotavirus en Venezuela, pais en el cual esta enfermedad representa la segunda causa de muerte en ninos menores de 4 anos de edad. Tambien se resume la informacion disponible hasta los momentos, sobre el desarrollo de vacunas anti-rotavirus y la incorporacion de la vacuna Rotarix® (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals) en el Programa Ampliado de Inmunizacion en Venezuela. ABSTRACT The human rotaviruses (HRV) of group A are the leading cause of severe diarrhea disease in infants and young children worldwide. Rotavirus-related deaths represent approximately 5% of all deaths in children younger than 5 years of age around the world, although the main impact of rotavirus disease occurs in developing countries, where it causes over 400.000 deaths each year. This article presents a review of the epidemiology of rotavirus gastroenteritis en Venezuela, where the disease represents the second leading cause of death in children under 4 years of age. It also summarizes the information available until now on development of rotavirus vaccines and incorporation of Rotarix® vaccine (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals) in the Expanded Immunization Program in Venezuela.
