Summary This research has been undertaken in the light of the worrying increase in failures and withdrawals during the first year of study of the students in the different levels of teacher training organised in our institute. We do not claim to give an exhaustive explanation of the reasons behind the success/failure pattern in the training of future teachers. In fact, our study is limited to an analysis of the incidence of certain easily identifiable objective parameters in scholastic results. The statistical analysis of the data accumulated and the interpretation of the results is divided into three parts. The first consists of a description of various characteristics of the student body: sex, age, sector and socio‐economic level of parents, areas of residence, previous academic record, higher education before entering IESP, work repeated at IESP.
