Thispaperpresents anoverview ofperformance ofnon-coherent, ultra-wideband (UWB)impulse radio(IR) receivers specifically focussing on Auto-correlation (AC)and energy detection (ED)receivers. Inthis paper, weusetheterm non-coherent receiver todenote asystem wherethephase ofthe received signal isnotusedinthedetection andsynchronization. Theperformance comparison isbasedonasimplified analysis ofthebiterrorrate(BER)ofdifferent receivers fordifferent modulation types; specifically binary pulse position modulation andbinary pulseamplitude modulation. ComparedwithAC receivers, theED receiver issignificantly lowercomplexity sup- porting easeofimplementation. An example implementation of oneED receiver architecture ispresented. Thetest circuits ofthe transceiver aredesigned for0.35,mSiGeBiCMOStechnology. Thenoise figure ofthefront-end oftheEDreceiver is73dBwhile thereceiver gainis34dB.Thepowerconsumption ofUWB-IR transceiver circuits is136mWwith100%dutycycle witha33V powersupply.
