Strategic Vocabulary Learning as a Complex Dynamic System

Drawing on multiple sources of data, this chapter relates vocabulary strategies to other concepts, such as context, agency, learning style and affect, and discusses their interrelationships. It presents a more holistic view of strategic vocabulary learning from both cognitive and sociocultural perspectives and proposes a conceptualisation of strategic learning as a complex dynamic system. It explores the notion of effective vocabulary learning and shifts the focus from the quantity to the quality of strategy use.
