Self-decontaminating antimicrobial textiles

2021
Abstract Self-decontaminating antimicrobial textiles are widely used for human protection and safety. Antimicrobial agents including organic and nanoparticles agents have been attached to fibres intended for applications such as self-decontaminating textiles. The textiles with decontaminating agents can be used as membranes, filters, clothing and food packaging. Different types of textiles including cotton, viscose, linen and wool have been modified to render them self-decontaminating textiles. The decontaminating agents can be integrated into textiles via several methods including in situ synthesis, grafting and coating. The fabrics with abundant functional groups offer simple and strong binding forces with the decontaminating agents. This book chapter summarizes self-decontaminating antimicrobial textiles modified with nanoparticles. The modification of textile with organic reagent was also covered briefly. Fundamental knowledge, as well as the recent technologies in this area, were discussed. Self-decontaminating textile for several applications, such as antibacterial, antifungal and wound bandage, were covered.
