Laparoscopy has only recently been recognized by the general surgical community as a useful technique for intra-abdominal procedures. Diagnostic laparoscopy has a number of applications for the general surgeon: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the first of many procedures that may prove useful. A view of the history of laparoscopy grants a perspective from which to look at the future.
