Electrochemical synthesis of MOFs

2020
Abstract In recent years, the electrochemical synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has gained high attention in emerging applications such as biomedical engineering. Different types of these coordination polymers have been synthesized by electrochemical methods such as anodic dissolution, reductive electrosynthesis, electrophoretic deposition, and galvanic displacement. Compared to conventional methods for synthesis of MOFs, electrochemical methods provide several advantages such as shorter synthesis times, controlling the thickness and morphology by altering applied current or voltage, as well as mild synthesis conditions. In this chapter, frequently used methods for the electrochemical synthesis of different MOFs on various substrates as well as their strengths and shortcomings and the effect of the electrochemical parameters on the properties of the synthesized materials are summarized.
