Commercial devices for determining the diffuse optical density S of samples, for example the DFE-10, usually have a dynamic range of variation of S from zero to three units. In this device, two photocells, which compare the light fluxes passing through the sample and an op- tical wedge, are connected by means of a differential circuit to a galvanometer.
