Analysis of Wind and Turbulence Fields in a Region with Complex Orography
1997
Abstract In a region of about 1000 km2 with complex orography, 1-h averages of wind and turbulence fields were analyzed over a period of 1 yr. It was shown that spatial homogeneity and temporal stationarity of the wind fields as well as the degree of spatial variation of turbulence intensity can be characterized by three index values: Ih, Is, and Itv, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed a correlation of these three index values. To simulate dispersion of air pollutants over complex terrain, turbulence measurements at one carefully selected location are enough to characterize the whole turbulence field. This statement does not apply for the mean wind field (wind speed and direction) that can be based only on a larger number of well-located stations.
