Introduction (Chap.1) to a Volume of Essays Entitled the Third Wave in Science and Technology Studies: Future Research Directions on the Study of Expertise and Experience

This introductory chapter to a collection of essays entitled The Third Wave in Science and Technology Studies: Future Research Direction on Expertise and Experience (forthcoming 2019) explains (i) the movement known as “Studies of Expertise and Experience” (S.E.E.) to readers not familiar with the methodology and its goals, and (ii) the structure of the book, emphasizing the importance of defining and standardizing scientific expertise in legal and political settings, introducing the concept of interactional expertise as experience-based and just as credible as the views of highly-credentialed experts, and explaining how “imitation games” demonstrate the acquisition of interactional expertise by those pretending to be something that they are not through “interaction” with an expert community.
